Today my topic is defense mechanisms! Which are there?? What do we use them for?? How can you reach, that you the, that may weigh down your life, ablegst? I am now dealing with these questions.

Defense mechanisms

Sigmund Freud coined this term, psychoanalyst, and also his daughter, Anna Freud. Freud defined defense mechanisms as follows: It is a strategy of the ego (awareness), the needs / drives of the id (Subconscious) to get around, because these needs from the superego (conscience) are prohibited.

So you have to take evasive action (is)Find, to bypass this superego instance and justify its actions in front of itself.

Defense mechanisms are perfect solutions for our consciousness, with which it maintains a calming worldview for us. Whatever might disturb this picture, is hidden. This includes feelings, Facts and actions, that are denied, to maintain the self-image. A confrontation with reality is rarely desired, because this experience is associated with diffuse fears, that could shake the self-made world.

These defense mechanisms develop over time. They are created as a filter, to categorize events in your own consciousness. Because every second of our life we are faced with immeasurable impressions, more, than consciousness can process.

That is why we have developed one or more systems, to make sense of the reality around us. This can of course be very useful, to protect us from it, to be driven mad by the many sensory impressions.

Defense mechanisms ensure this, that we feel safe and better. Everything is in the right categories and we don't have to fear any surprises.

Unfortunately, this categorization can also lead to problems with ourselves and our environment.

We don't see things, as they are, but how we are.

Anais Nin

The degree of control is crucial when dealing with one's own defense mechanisms, that we own about them. Because basically they are nothing more, as prejudices, that we create, to keep everything in order. These can take the form of social, political or personal beliefs occur and thus prevent personal development.

I will take a closer look at the most common defense mechanisms here:

Antizipation

When anticipating, an event that has not yet occurred is anticipated.

It's being attempted, upcoming dangers, Events, Conversations etc. to control. You plan every detail of a situation that has not yet happened so as not to be surprised.

This happens, to defuse dangers, that threatens self-image by failing in the upcoming situations.

An example here is the preparation for a presentation:

You fear, through stage fright, that you get, when you speak in front of others, Not being able to give your presentation well.

That's why you prepare yourself very well, create presentations, with the help of which you cannot lose the thread. In addition, you plan to, speak slowly and take a breath, so that you stay calm.

So you prepare yourself thoroughly for every aspect and you will be able to present your presentation well.

However, this defense mechanism can also have a negative impact, to that extent, than you can get away from the “impending danger” puts himself under great pressure and compulsively every aspect, that could happen, played through again and again in spirit.

Let's take the example with the presentation again:

In the days before you should give your presentation, you imagine yourself exactly, what can go wrong: You start to stutter, tarnish red, You can't remember, what you wanted to say.

100 Things can go wrong and illuminate each and every one of you several times. You can’t get out of the junk anymore, what could happen.

Busy with these thoughts, you lack concentration, To prepare you properly for the presentation.

During the day, where you should hold it, you report sick.

In the first scenario, anticipation is productive and well thought out. You are well prepared, because you made a plan, with which you were able to cope well with the situation and have been active.

The second scenario was less favorable. I know this procedure from myself earlier, when I hardly did anything, besides imagining the worst.

It will of course also become more difficult, if there is not just a future situation, that scares you, but several.

To prevent this thought or to mitigate it, please read my previous post: https://janinalaurien.com/wie-du-grubeln-stoppen-kannst/

Here I go to the phenomenon “Brooding” a, and how to get rid of negative thought patterns.

Affect isolation

With the mechanism of affect isolation, emotional aspects are suppressed or. just hidden. The motives are rationalized, from which you act, instead of.

You distance yourself emotionally from a triggering event, around, mostly negative, To suppress emotions and feelings. You don't have to justify your own actions towards yourself, but looks at her soberly, from a factual perspective and says to itself, that you couldn't react differently.

The real emotions, that we don't live out in these locations, remain stored in our subconscious as a repressed memory.

We can pat ourselves on the shoulders in this session, how rationally we dealt with this problem.

An example from my life:

My mother died, if I 12 Was years old. It was a big loss, which I survived with a lot of affect isolation. I “forgot” simple, that it had existed, the next day I went back to school and on the day of her death I sorted out her things, what I wanted to keep.

My family was horrified by my cold behavior. I just kept going, as if nothing had happened. Nobody knew, how to deal with me, because I wasn't ready to talk, I was fine!

In my teenage years I fell through frequent truancy, Disrupt lessons and a general lick-me-ass- Mood on. I was the bad influence on others and was looking for my kind.

Started from high school, I finally graduated from secondary school and that too, because I stayed so often, that this degree is mandatory for 11 School years stood.

Then migraines came in adult life, Panikanfälle, Social phobia, diffuse fears and somatoform disorders such as fibromyalgia.

As you can see, Affect isolation works, just not for long.

If you want to know, how I made it out of this deep hole, please read my post:

It has not always been easy, to fight, but every success has led to more will and finally brought me to my goal: Satisfaction in all areas of life!

Dramatization

This defense mechanism is really widespread and is used to attract attention, because you suffer from feelings of inferiority.

According to the motto: “Better pity and negative attention than none!”

We do it several times a day, unless we start, to pay attention to our words:

  • “That was the worst, what ever happened to me!” (Of course that's not true, surely more terrible things have happened in your life, just not today).
  • “Today was the worst day ever!”
  • “The weather is a disaster! an absolute disaster!” (Maybe the weather is not good, but a disaster is different)

Who dramatizes, represents one's own experience and feelings with excessively emotional and with the use of many superlatives (gladly repeated) but.

Fear is often behind the dramatization, to be ignored. If you apply it too thickly, you want to secure the other person's attention. Which usually backfires.

It's also very important, so as not to internalize his mostly negative feelings, to bring a certain distance between yourself and your thoughts.

If you always think, “I've never had someone as bad as me!” that could eventually convince them: “My life is bad”

It's best to reflect on your own statements beforehand, whether really everything is always so bad, or whether you can interpret the experience positively.

try it, it is fun, come up with new positive attitudes! Here are a few tips, how it works:

Idealization / submission

The idealization is expressed in this, that you only see the best in people or situations. The critic, that could lead to a conflict is weakened and downplayed. You are, so to speak, the yes-man.

Logically, idealization is followed by submission, because one has to submit to one's ideals without criticism.

example: “My husband is the best person in the world!”

It is very clear, that this statement makes clear: “He doesn't make mistakes.”

The more you submit, the more idealization is necessary, to justify your own behavior.

In another context, this idealization can quickly lead to the spread of fundamentalist ideologies.

Because, no matter how hostile a worldview is, she always goes with the readiness of her followers, to idealize them, Hand in hand.

Fixation

Fixation is standing still at a certain stage of development, thereby avoiding fears, to fail at the next phase of life.

example:

Mark has long been that age, where he could have a girlfriend. His friends start, to start their families. However, he still lives at home and often sits in front of the computer.

He doesn't have to help much in the household and his mother cooks for him and irons the laundry. Mark has never done that himself.

Due to strong fear of the future and weak self-confidence, the person remains in the state, that he knows.

A possibility, you can change this behavior here:

https://janinalaurien.com/wie-du-grubeln-stoppen-kannst

and here: https://janinalaurien.com/zielfindung-leicht-gemacht/

projection

Projection is a method, to deny or negate a fact, so the happening, the person, not perceiving the event like this, how it is.

You interpret something into it, assumes characteristics and covers the happenings with their own interpretations.

It happens a lot, that own impulses and properties, that you don't want to admit to yourself, to be pushed towards and subordinated to others. Projection can often be recognized by the general nature, with which these judgments are made.

The senses are not deceptive, but the judgment is good.

Goethe

That means, the event itself is not the problem, it is simply filtered through your own interpretation of reality.

Projections are favored by these factors:

  • Self-doubt
  • Fear of heteronomy
  • Social isolation

Conflicts are reduced by projection, who rage in yourself. The self-image remains unaffected, clear and contradictory. But what happens, is, that the perception of others is distorted. Da Impulse, that you don't want to admit, automatically as “bad” be considered, projection leads to degradation of others and thus to hostile behavior.

Mild forms of projection can often be found. However, this view of the world can lead to delusions of persecution, even if it is particularly large.

To lose these defense mechanisms, mindfulness can also be of great help. Here you only concentrate on the here and now, to the current impressions and can gain some peace and manageability.

Here is a link on mindfulness:

https://janinalaurien.com/achtsamkeit-unglaublich-wirksam-entspannen-in-nur-2-minuten/

rationalization

Rationalization rates the theoretical aspect of a situation more than the emotional one.

Like most defense mechanisms, rationalization also serves this purpose, Avoid conflicts and secure your own independence, because contemplation creates a distance to your own emotions.

Who you rationalize too much, So trying to explain itself too much logically, contact with others becomes fake. And this is exactly what can change this unemotional view to the contrary: Tensions and conflicts arise, the supposed autonomy is lost.

Reaction formation

This characterizes reaction formation, that an impulse, one is afraid of, is exchanged through completely opposite behavior.

Examples:

  • One would like to just yell at the others. Instead, you smile
  • One would like to go to the boss's throat. Instead, you are friendly
  • The best thing would be to just stay at home and read. Instead, you accompany the joy to a party

As with the other mechanisms, there are unclear boundaries between conscious intent, to act like that and automated behavior. If you persistently ignore your own needs in favor of others and always act contrary to your own will, you push these needs into the subconscious.

generalization

One of the most common defense mechanisms is generalization. We use generalizations every day and this is very beneficial, because if we couldn't, Classify and classify knowledge. If we couldn't, we would have great difficulty, getting up in the morning, because we would spend the dear long day with it, to put the most normal things in context.

So you don't have to think again every time, how to open a door, made that once, you can apply this experience to different scenarios.

However, there is a dark side to generalization, when you classify an experience and then make subconscious decisions, to apply this experience to different situations, where this labeling doesn't fit.

example: A child is learning, that it can protect itself well against conflicts in the family, when it retreats to a room and is silent.

As an adult, applying this strategy creates major social problems, if you always withdraw from conflict-ridden situations.

This form of generalization holds us back and prevents us, to the full potential, what's in one, to access.

displacement

Displacement is a useful strategy, not paying attention to everything around us, this would completely overload and overwhelm our consciousness.

On another level it can lead to it, that painful experiences and memories are so successfully pushed into the subconscious, that it can lead to somatoform disorders at a later time.

The conscious memory of such an experience is usually completely inaccessible and becomes “to forget”.

Defense mechanisms against and against

After this digression into the various defense mechanisms of the human psyche, one can say, that these mechanisms can have positive and negative effects on themselves and the environment. When used correctly, they protect us.

On the one hand, moderately used, certain defense mechanisms can protect our mind from being overwhelmed and are therefore very useful.

On the other hand, and this is especially with the defense mechanisms repression, Isolation and generalization possible, these methods of mind can take care of it, that the body actually becomes ill from these repressed experiences.

Very good for consciously dealing with the defense mechanisms, is mindfulness. Then you are in the here and now and only see everything from this moment.
