What is brooding and how does it come about?? What consequences can brooding have on your mental and physical health?? What can you do about the agonizing thoughts??

Here I would like to get to the bottom of one of the causes, which is often responsible for mental illness, which leads to depression, can cause pain and will not let you sleep at night: The brooding.

Hey, you might think, but everyone always thinks something.

That's true. But thinking and pondering are two fundamentally different approaches. I will go into this in more detail shortly.

Now let's see, to what extent brooding may affect your life and what you can do, to distance yourself from your negative thoughts.

Most people, that are often depressed mood, know that: The thoughts revolve around the same topics over and over again. And they are not positive thoughts.

It is the appearance of negative memories, that are associated with insults, fears and conflicts. The more you ponder, the more topics arise and you are in a true vicious circle of tormenting thoughts, that don't go away.

Brooding increases an already negative mood and continued brooding can increase the likelihood, for mental illness. Research on this area of psychology has shown, that rumination (years.: Brooding) Depression intensifies and also causes psychosomatic pain in the back among other things- and shoulder area leads.

Insomnia too, In studies, lack of drive and attention deficit can be traced back to brooding.

The hallmarks are persistent and stressful brooding:

If you recognized yourself on these points, then please read on, because I will show you solutions, how to get rid of these tormenting thoughts.

Maybe you think now, that many people are worried, that this cannot possibly be the reason for your depression.

Brooding or worrying?

Now, there is a difference between worrying and brooding.

Most of the worries are the fear of future events. You worry, what is happening, when you get sick, loses his job, something happens to someone, who is close to you.

Here is the inner question: Was? Z.B. What is happening, if…?

It is not easy here either, to deal with this fear of the future, but you can consider, that these events haven't happened yet.

Because researchers have found out, that 80 % of the things, we care about, never arrive. With others 15 % we can handle our worries well or master the situations, who were afraid, better than expected. The others 5% can arrive, but they are beyond our control.

If you read the paragraph again, you will automatically notice, so that worries are unnecessary, because we either never get into the dreaded situations or their outcome is better, when our worries made us believe, so there is no reason, To make your life complicated, by thinking about things, that haven't happened yet.

Worries are too rough 90 % unfounded, but release diffuse fears. Try , Just look at the sites neutrally and you can live more freely in the future. Because you know now, that most of your worries are unfounded.

Brooding

Brooding- based on the past

Brooder, on the other hand, usually feel a feeling of deep sadness instead of fear and mainly deal with the question: Why?

People who tend to ponder, have trouble, Hiding negatives and therefore concentrate on events or happenings, that were painful to them in the past.

Brooding is based on the past, of things, that have been happening for a long time and are no longer changeable. No possible solutions are sought here, but only problems and increased by the constant repetition.

You start with a thought, mostly a negative, and then the thoughts go on. You can think of more and more things, that you could have done differently, The situation, in which you could have behaved differently and then it goes on and on…

The topics of the brooding are changed unchecked and none is brought to an end.

This creates a spiral of negative thought patterns, favor increasing pessimism. You feel hopeless and your motivation wanes.

The negative thoughts and beliefs multiply.

The constant preoccupation with one's own negative thoughts prevents, that it is easier to get over insults or rejections and to bring these feelings out again for a long time.

One ponders to solve problems or to understand them. Unfortunately, brooding is not solution-oriented, but abstract and therefore one gets lost in the thoughts, that show up.

A researcher, who has dealt extensively with the subject of brooding, is Susan Nolen Hoeksema. She researched the connection between the agonizing thoughts and mental illnesses: Here is an abstract in English about her research : https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/4037/86d34b636b8a7aebcde9c1f21a63816d516e.pdf

Resolving the unwanted negative patterns

Neurobiological studies have shown, that persistent brooding changes the way the brain works and reduces brain volume in specific areas of the brain, who are involved in mental processes.

So how can you overcome your rumination?

Strategies for new ways of thinking

1.) Regain control of your attention

Thoughts, which you have, are just thoughts. You can get them under control.

I used to ponder a lot and then just hung little stop signs in the apartment, that should remind me, to stop thinking like that. that worked really well. Because I wanted to, that this eternal problem stops rolling.

What you can think about again and again, is, that you are not your thoughts. You can choose for yourself, what you think and influence your thoughts about it. Don´t try, to suppress the brooding or to judge you for your thoughts, but make up your mind, to think differently.

A thought is just a thought. Not you.

Give it a try, one of your negative thoughts approx. 10 x to speak out loud. Always the same.

What will happen?

Each of us has spoken a very simple word many times in a row and then noticed how strange and strange the word suddenly sounds. So you can do it with your negative thought patterns.

3.) Postpone the brooding

Give yourself certain times, in which you ponder. Your should too “Brooding” be limited to a period of time. Imagine an alarm clock, when you are so deep in thought, that you forget the time.

You can tell yourself, when you realize, that brooding begins: “Now I can't deal with it, I'll think about it in an hour!” Or any other time.

So you can see, that you have the power, Control your thoughts and don't have to deal with them immediately.

Studies have shown, that many people do not even notice this brooding date, because they had successfully done it before, not to ponder.

4.) deflection

Distract yourself! read a book, an interesting article. Go for a walk or shop, you need. Clean up and create order.

No matter what, the main thing is that it distracts you.

6.) mindfulness – relaxed in the here and now

Mindfulness is a state, in which all attention intentionally is drawn to the present experience, where one lives from moment to moment, not in the past or the future.

It means, to be attentive, concentrated and focused on the present moment. With full attention and without assessing the circumstances and the environment, but with curiosity, acceptance and openness.

Mindfulness is not meditation, you do not need to make your head completely free. The goal is not, to force you, to stop thinking, but attention to the present moment, the perception of an experience, which just now takes place to focus.

You can walk carefully, by noticing, how your feet move while running, how they roll and you touch the ground firmly.

Be attentive and open to that, what's happening around you. Look at a tree with all your attention, a house, anything about. absorb all impressions in you.

Or listen very carefully, what's happening in your environment: The bird, who hisses, the sounds of city traffic. Then just concentrate on a noise and listen carefully.

The characteristics of mindfulness I summarize here together again:

  • valueless – You have a thought, without tracking or indulging it
  • Patiently – just enjoy the moment, instead of following a thought for the future
  • Curious – meet the known with curiosity, as if you see it for the first time.
  • trusting – Have trust in yourself, your intuition and your feelings
  • be aimlessly – You need not try, to get anywhere. Just be in this moment
  • allowing – Just be open to , what just happen with no plan, without a goal
  • accepting – See things in the present yes right so, as they are
  • Letting go – So you're standing over the day and sleep well at night!!

5.) acceptance

Acceptance does not mean, that you like something, that you want something, to happen again or that it would like to have in your life. This is not at all the meaning of acceptance.

It means: I take me as I am, I am just now. I can live fully in the present, no matter what I have experienced or did in the past .

Because some things you just can not change , such as. your past. You can believe it, of course,, that something needs to be solved or something big should happen, before you can start, to change something. Unfortunately, this is a misconception.

You can try for the rest of your life, To change your past and will never be able to. You can accept but, take it like it is, that things have been so and move on, without the guilt, the pain, of fear or whatever else, at this moment, to let slow down in the now.

By accepting the past, you can take away the importance or at least your interpretation of your past. and allow positive changes

You can put aside your past problems and develop but be present in the moment, the here and now, absolutely delight in its full maximum!

Accept, who you are NOW, and let everything else behind you, because just as it is indeed: it's behind you, in the past. You can not change it, no matter how hard you try or condemn it or be ashamed of it. So you accept NOW, because if you see it realistically, there is only this moment.

By the paradoxical exercise of acceptance you can win the ultimate and complete freedom for you. Because if you accept something, as it is, then it has no more power over you.

The past is over, the future is not there yet, so why worry or grieve for these two periods? That seems pointless. Make the best, from each torque, because that puts you ahead!!

Acceptance in the here and now is a good way, to create spaces and opportunities to, to start something new.
