There is hardly a more important recognition for us humans than gratitude and appreciation. And they are two characteristics, that, when we give them, do so much good to ourselves.

Appreciation is vital for our survival, or rather our brain. It is a basic need, to be accepted, to be valued and belonging to someone ore something, no matter what culture you grow up in, no matter how old you are or how young.

To show, how much a person or his action means to us, is a real good feeling. Not just the other one, who thereby gets a positive mood, but also those, who act respectfully.

Because this attitude towards others strengthens their self-worth as well as your own. You probably know the feeling, if someone thanks you from the bottom of his heart. It touches you and reinforces you , to do something right, to have done something good for someone else. You will feel gratitude, too .

Self-worth through appreciation and gratitude

And it is exactly the same for the thankful one: He is thankful, for something, what was done for him, was done with him and feels, that he means so much to someone.

But be careful: of course it is important, that every expression of appreciation is meant honestly and seriously and relates to something specific. By showing, that we heard and understood each other, the other person feels perceived.

Gratitude in child rearing

That also helps enormously, to promote confidence and willingness to compromise with children. When a small person sees himself as part of a whole, as a full member, that can make decisions, that naturally increases self-esteem.

It works very well at our home. From the beginning, I placed my son in a position, that he's the most important thing in the world. He can always speak his mind, I specifically ask him for it. Because why should we do something, what he doesn't enjoy? Why should I say no to trifles?, Just to say no or to demonstrate my power?

Draw the fine line, whether I raise a little bully or an angel, is not always easy. However, I can see through his behavior, that he is thankful for , how much understanding and attention he gets.

In fact, he never takes advantage of that. My son shows understanding and gives , what he gets back to the same extent. Appreciation for the other is very important to us at home.

So he helps me around the house, little things, of course, for which I am grateful and always tell him that. Explicitly what I thank him for, so that he knows and will help again in the future.

That's exactly how I enjoy it, of course, if I can do something for him or allow him something, what he wants. That makes no effort at all, on the contrary, it makes everyone's life easier.

Nightly, when M. is lying in bed, I tell him, that he is the most valuable person in the world to me, that I love him more than anything else in the world and then I thank him for things, that I didn't take for granted, things he did that day.

I also tell him, that today (so every day) was a great day with him and I had a lot of fun and joy with him.

Appreciation and gratitude for little things

There is so much, for which each of us can be thankful. Most of the time we hardly notice these little things, because we take them for granted. To learn to appreciate these little things, is important.

Make a list, mentally or on paper, what YOU are thankful for. I'm sure, that you can think of amazing things after a short time, for which you feel thankful.

Or write a letter, only to you, which people are important to you in your life. Write down, what you can be thankful for, what you particularly value about them or how exactly they enrich your life. You will also notice here, how many reasons there are, to make these people happy more often.

Maybe with the words, as you described them in your letter? I have to admit, I don't write much, no lists, no insights (for me personally), but I wrote such a letter. And it actually helped me.

Because nothing can be taken for granted! When it comes to other people, you can see almost everything as a gift, because nobody is obliged, to make your life better. Only you can do that. So don't rely on others. Just appreciate small gifts and give them back when the opportunity arises.

Just look one day, or just a few hours, mindful and attentive to your surroundings, your fellow human beings. And find these little things, in which you perceive them. You will find something. All this, what you wouldn’t have noticed before, because you're distracted or stressed, let it in your life, in your consciousness.

Appreciate these moments and be thankful, for everything, what you notice. And in return, be very aware, where you can show or express your appreciation to others. Because everyone else needs this feeling just like you.

All the little gifts of attention do cost nothing and bring so much for everyone . it's worth it, just give it a try. Whether you compliment, listening to someone attentively, when he talks about something, that is important to him, open the door for your neighbor with a smile, all of this can enrich your life and another ones.

Appreciation is food for the brain

The brain is also delighted when it comes to appreciative care. It is a basic human need, to be accepted, to be loved and perceived. If this need is not met over a long period of time, depression, anger and a burnout syndrome can occur.

So it is central, to give and receive gratitude, to show appreciation and to receive it and so build a healthy, and stable self, that is looking forward to the things that crosses its way in a positive manner, .. If you can support others, to be able to feel the same way, it’s wonderful!

Gratitude and appreciation can inspire us. You can change everyone for the better. And it is so easy to make, other people happy and support them with attention, compliments (just meant seriously), and praise .

The immune system can also suffer from mental stress, that come from too little attention, .. So it is also important for your health, to experience appreciation.

And it is just as important for others. So you can be a deciding factor, whether other people feel good and stay healthy. If that doesn't give you a great feeling!

Accept positive feedback… and give it back

If you hide your feelings, to be cool or unapproachable, think too much about your status in social networks, in the company or among friends, then at some point you get off the path.

Maintaining gratitude and appreciation are a basic need. What are you, if you are not important to yourself, for the people around you? Receiving positive feedback is important and irreplaceable. Otherwise you feel insecure. So it is also extremely important, that you can acknowledge this feedback.

Believe people, that reinforce you, who have recognition and praise for you. Trust in it, that hardly anyone shows appreciation, if he’s not serious about it. Appreciation is existential, for each and everyone of us. And if you give, you will get it too.

Both ways strengthen your self-confidence, can motivate you, in every sense. Do not close your heart to serious care from others, because that's exactly what, you need. Have empathy with others and you will see, that you always get something back.

Just try it for four days or which time frame seems appropriate to you. Smile, make compliments, be thankful and show others their worth. Maybe you keep a diary about it. Reflect, what triggers this behavior in you, what reactions you got.

Maybe you try, just to be thankful, for the things and persons, what you already have and appreciate it more than before.
